Sand Monitoring for Safer Oil and Gas Production

In reservoirs containing mainly unconsolidated sand, where sand flows together with liquid and gas to the surface, sand monitoring is important for operational excellence. Sand rate and sand grain size measurement throughout the operational phase is essential to prevent damage to downstream equipment, reducing maintenance costs, minimizing losses due to leakage, and avoiding unplanned shutdowns.

The Challenge

Large oil and gas resources can be found in reservoirs containing unconsolidated sand. Today, shallow biogenic gas reservoirs containing unconsolidated sand also have significant development potential. However, one of the main challenges in developing these reservoirs is the production of unconsolidated sand together with oil and gas to the surface.

This produced sand can erode choke valves, pipelines, and other downstream equipment, resulting in high maintenance costs and significant production losses due to leakage and unplanned shutdowns. Therefore, sand rate and sand grain size measurement using manual sampling (sand sampler) should be installed downstream of the wellhead to monitor sand production and support safe and reliable operations.

The Solution

Different with acoustic sand monitoring which prone to interference from other equipment vibration and depending on flow rate, Leutert sand sampler capture the sample from production flow line directly to the sand sampler equipment where mesh filter inside of sand sampler housing. This mesh filter will capture the sand in accordance to the mesh size. The mesh size available are 5,10,20,50,100,200 and 500 microns flexible to use in filter holder. In addition, body housing of sand sampler has capacity 300 cc or other request and pressure rating up to 15,000 psi (1,035 barg), temperature rating -20 deg C to 200 deg C.

The wetted part is 316 SST compliance to NACE MR0175 available for sulfinert coating to improve the material lifetime from H2S and CO2. Leutert sand sampler can be used as portable or fix installation together with manual gas cylinder in the back-panel. Also, Leutert sand sample compliance to PED, make it suitable for running safely in high pressure and high temperature conditions.
